8. The fall of The Soviet Union began to happen when Mikhail Gorbachev came to power. It happened shortly before midnight on March 11, 1985. The central committee announced that Mikhail Gorbachev would succeed. Konstantin Cherenkov, who had been dead for 4 hours. Gorbachev quickly moved to see him apart from potential rivals,he created a platform. From this point on the USSR did make reforms, and signed treaties to disame both of the superpowers.
