Definitions of the Day (DODs) 9.2 – The Distance Formula and the Midpoint Formula Distance Formula Midpoint of a line segment Midpoint Formula
3
Given a Right Triangle on a coordinate plane… Can we find the length of the hypotenuse? Does this look familiar? hypotenuse length of leg?
4
The distance between any two points (x 1, y 1 ) and (x 2, y 2 ) is : Distance Formula Notice! It does not matter which point is used for (x 1, y 1 ) and (x 2, y 2 ). The distance formula gives a number answer!
5
What is a midpoint? Midpoint: The midpoint of a segment is the point M halfway between A and B where AM=MB Midpoint
6
Midpoint Formula Midpoint Formula: The midpoint M of a line segment with endpoints A(x 1, y 1 ) and B(x 2, y 2 ) is: ***Notice! Your answer is a coordinate pair, not a number!
7
Example 1. Find the distance between the points (5, -2) and (8, -6). 2. Find the midpoint between the points (5, -2) and (8, -6).
8
Example 3. Find the distance between the points (-3, 5) and (-9, 4). 4. Find the midpoint between the points (-3, 5) and (-9, 4).
9
Your Turn!! 1. Find the distance between the points (-1, -2) and (4, -6). 2. Find the midpoint between the points (-1, -2) and (4, -6).
10
Sentence Frames 1.The distance formula will always give an answer that is a ________________. 2. The midpoint formula will always give an answer that is a ________________.
