Vascular Plants Vascular Plants contain two networks of tubes in their stems, leaves, and roots. One of these networks transports water, and the other transports food made in the leaves to the other plant parts.

Parts of a Vascular Plant
Roots Stem Leaves Ovule Stigma Ovary Petal Anther

Roots Water and nutrients from the soil enter the plant through the roots. Water tubes in the roots carry water to water tubes in the stems.

Stems Water tubes in the stem then carry water to water tubes in the leaves. Some of the water then evaporates into the air through a process called transpiration.

Leaves Food tubes carry food made in the leaves to food tubes in the stem and roots. Some food tubes run all the way from the leaves down to the roots.

Ovule This part contains the egg cell.

Anther This part of the stamen contains pollen.

What is pollen? The fine powder like material consisting of pollen grains that is produced by the anthers of seed plants. After you strip away the blossom of the male flower, the pollen is readily visible.

Stages in Reproduction
An insect or the wind carries pollen grains from another flower to this one. The pollen grains land on the stigma and a pollen tube grows down through the style to the ovary. The nucleus of the pollen grain passes down the tube. It fertilizes the egg cell inside the ovule. The fertilized egg cell develops into an embryo. The ovary becomes the fruit and the ovule becomes the seed.
