1 Chapter 9 Review and Recap

2 9.1– Studying Human Populations
Key Questions: Why would we study population in Environmental Science? How do we study populations? How and why has human population changed over time? What factors do we consider when predicting future population growth? How do economic and social changes affect population growth rates? 9.2—Changing Population Trends Key Questions: What are the problems associated with population growth? Are the proposed problems actually problems? What solutions exist for such problems? How effective are these proposed solutions? How do population growth trends differ between developed and developing countries? What are the population projections for the next century? 1:30-2:20

3 Human Population 9.1 Key Terms Migration Life Expectancy Age Structure
Demography Age Structure Survivorship Fertility Rate Migration Life Expectancy Demographic Transition Developed Countries Developing Countries Factors used to study and predict population growth. 1:30-2:20

4 Discuss the following question as a class and write an answer on the board : Why are we studying the human population? 1:30-2:20

5 Discuss and Discover We discussed all but the last two items on this timeline. Answer the following with a partner (5 min). Why are these two items on the map? What connection is there between population, poverty, and a rise in urban living? 1:30-2:20

6 One more Timeline question:
On your timeline worksheet, there are two more significant dates listed. Do some research as a class or search your brains and write/discuss why these dates are significant. 1:30-2:20

7 Discuss the following question as a class and write an answer on the board : How and why has human population changed over time? 1:30-2:20

8 If time remains, share the results of your homework on CO2 Emissions vs. Population growth with a partner. After you have finished discussing (5 or so minutes), answer the following questions as a class: Why was the Breathing Earth website created? What kinds of things does it show? Does it show a correlation between population and Carbon emissions? If so, what kind? Direct (as one increases the other increases) or Inverse (as one increases the other decreases)? 1:30-2:20

9 Developed vs. Developing Countries
Developed Countries Developing Countries Population Growth Type of Economy Pollution Average Income Where Most People Live Access to Education Why? Examples of Countries 1:30-2:20

10 Discussion Questions Yes? No? Why?
5. Do you think that simply changing birth rates will cause a nation to undergo further development? Yes? No? Why? 1:30-2:20

11 Reflection Questions to Consider
Solutions Pros Cons Absurd or Reasonable? Example: Abortion- keep women from having the babies the conceive Fewer people consuming resources, fewer unwanted children Morally unacceptable (killing an innocent human being is always wrong) ? What do you think ? Contraception One-Child Policy Read article about 1-child policy in China and write 1 page reflection answering the questions (you may write or type it): Is/was it a good policy? What are the economic ramifications of the policy? What are the moral/emotional/psychological ramifications of the policy? You may conduct additional research online if you wish—Reflection is due Monday. 1:30-2:20

12 Environmental Problems Satire
What issue or issues will you seek to solve? Of these issues, which are causes and which are effects? Or are they unrelated? Are there any solutions to these issues that would seem logical and fitting at first but would lead to disastrous ends? Is there anything that we are already doing to solve this problem that could get out of hand and become absurd if it continues along the same path? To Homework 12:35-1:25
