2 What is Nanofutures ? The aim of the Nanofutures platform is to develop a common roadmap with regard to nanotechnology Identification of strategic « key nodes » –Crossing between sectorial needs and horizontal issues

3 Methodology Sectorial needs: representatives from ETP –ERTRAC, ENIAC, PHOTONICS21, ETPIS, ECTP, MANUFUTURE, NANOMEDICINE, MINAM, EUMAT, SUSCHEM, FTC Horizontal issues: –Research/Technology –Industrialization/nano-Manufacturing –Communication –Safety Research –Industrial safety Strategy –Industrial Nanosafety Strategy Group –Standardization –Regulation –Technology Transfer and Innovation Financing –Networking –Skills and Education

5 Photonics21 needs (1) Need number 1 Understanding and modeling of nanostructured materials Description of the need Understanding the electromagnetic properties and physics of the metamaterials (synthetic materials, mostly nanostructured) Examples of actions to address the need Research in modelling of nanostructured materials (eg. photonic crystals, quantum dots including composite colloidal nanoparticles in a glass or polymer matrix or semiconductor media, materials exhibiting negative permittivity or permeability or both) Target time [1] of the needed actions [1] Short term Target industrial sectors Generic topic that addresses all sectors of photonics (solid state lighting, lasers, optical communications, photovoltaics, biosensing, …) Expected Impact New physical effects leading to higher performance/lower cost/new functionalities are expected Sample expert organizations/individuals from your ETP Many high-level academic labs in Europe

9 Photonics21 needs (5) Need number 5 Convergence of nanophotonics with nanoelectronics Description of the need Integration of photonics with electronics, fabrication of nanophotonics devices with nanoelectronics equipment, CMOS compatibility Examples of actions to address the need Coordination of nanoelectronics Target time [1] of the needed actions [1] short Target industrial sectors Generic topic that addresses all sectors of photonics, more particularly optical interconnects, optical communications, sensing Expected Impact European and scientific and industrial environment is very favourable to the development of this technology, with a combination of excellent research laboratories, CMOS foundries already involved in the “More than Moore” field with top-level 200mm and 300mm facilities, optoelectronic components manufacturers and end-users for telecoms, datacoms, computing or sensing applications.
