1 Sex & relationships education Year 8 PSHCE LO: Recap: Sexual activity, human reproduction, contraception, pregnancy, STIS and HIV and how high risk behaviours affect the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities Can recognize and discuss the importance of relationships to sexual activity (e.g. in terms of human reproduction, using contraception & STIs including HIV) & to marriage, parenthood & family life Discover examples of diverse values encountered in society and the clarification of personal values physical and emotional change and puberty the features of positive and stable relationships, how to deal with a breakdown in a relationship and the effects of loss and bereavement different types of relationships, including those within families and between older and young people, boys and girls, and people of the same sex, including civil partnerships the nature and importance of marriage and of stable relationships for family life and bringing up children the similarities, differences and diversity among people of different race, culture, ability, disability, gender, age and sexual orientation and the impact of prejudice, bullying, discrimination and racism on individuals and communities

2 Do not be scared, be prepared SOME PEOPLE ARE GAY, GET OVER IT!! SOME PEOPLE ARE LESBIAN, GET OVER IT!! You may want to withdraw because of religious reasons, we understand that. We would like your child to still have a go and see what it is like to learn about it in the lesson. Are you worried about your child learning about sex education? It is ok to say no to sex! Ask yourself these questions: Are you unsure what to do if you don’t want to learn about it? Is there someone you can talk to about sex? What is safe and what is not safe? How are boys different to girls? How does your body change? If you would like to stop your child learning about Sex; please contact Mr Mitchell he will respect Wishes! By Year 7 boys (2012)

3 Starter (5-10 mins): recap. What do we already know? What do we need to know now? (& what can we leave until, say Y11) In a small group (on your table) read & discuss pages 10-11 (Your Life 1). In 5 mins we’ll have a whole class discussion: were there any questions on pages 10-11 we couldn’t answer? Plenary

4 Task 1 Sex & contraception (15 mins) In a small group (on your table) read & discuss pages 68-9 (Your Life 2) 1.Sex & contraception… your questions answered (5 mins) Plenary: whole class share what we’ve learned 2. Page 69 & the In groups question in the box at the bottom of p 69 (5 mins) Plenary: What’s our answer to Q2? What have we learned?

5 Task 2 Sexual rights & responsibilities - & myths (15 mins) In a small group (on your table) read & discuss pages 70-71 1.P 70 Sexual rights & responsibilities (5 mins) Plenary: whole class share what we’ve learned 2. Page 71 Myths, advice & what is acceptable in a sexual relationship? (5 mins) Plenary: what have we learned? (& what do we need to move on to next year?)

6 Now we’re ready to do our research & creative bits of our work in this SRE unit A poster or display? A leaflet (explaining puberty perhaps to a worried Y7?) An item for the newsletter (perhaps reassuring them about what goes on in PSHCE/ SRE lessons)? A role play?A poem?A dance or cheer? A film?A tweet (see over)?

7 'The most important thing for me and my friends is that we should talk about it when we grow older. Tell teenagers as they are older.' 'Well the most important thing is that you shopuld explain what sex is and also what can come from sex and how to prevent sex.' 'We think it is important to learn about sex education like learning about your body because incase of a relationship.' 'The most important thing about sex and relationships is to know your limits and dont rush things by being a person like a teenage mum.' 'If you want to tell someone young about sex and relationships teach them about friendship first.' 'Knowing how to look after your body as it changes. Learning that changes are normal to you. I'd like to know how to be smart in relationships.' Year 6 - twitter tin Having completed a number of activities to explore what should be taught in SRE and how, Year 6 pupils focused on writing a 'tweet' to sum up their thoughts about SRE. The Sex Education Forum will broadcast these tweets on behalf of the pupils from the @sex_ed_forum account on 18 April 2013. The tweets are recorded below.

8 'What I think (about) is AIDS and HIV and having protected sex because if you have a baby and you have HIV it might catch the disease.' 'I would like to tell the headteacher why sex education is important. So they can give us advise for the future.' 'I think that teachers should do more lessons about sexually transmitted diseases re: AIDS.' 'Knowing how to have sex safely without getting HIV. Make sure you can use condoms properly.' 'I think sex and relationships could be helpful because we need to know about sex so we can be prepared when we are older.' 'Sex is not a thing to play with its a thing that only adults can express themselves with. DO not allow teenagers to try sex.' 'As you get older you develop new things so its better to behave in a serious way. In a relationship you need to act in a serious way.'
