Johnny Clem One of the most famous Civil War drummers was Johnny Clem. At the age of nine, Clem ran away from his home in Ohio to join the Union army. Clem went from drummer boy to soldier during the Battle of Shiloh. After his drum was shattered, young Clem picked up a gun and began firing. Within two years he was promoted to sergeant to become the youngest noncommissioned officer in the Union army. After the Civil War, Clem attended West Point and made the military his career. Growing Opposition: take notes on who opposed the war and why.
