21 History - Ku-niu-ling 1895 - “Bull” Peak in Background A sacred Moutain celebrated by monks and poets for thousands of years by Chinese “The name of the highest peak, opposite the entrance” to the saddle of land he had purchased “is Ku-niu-ling or Bull Peak, the valley…is called the Chang-ch’ung or Long Valley. I did not like any of these names so I gave the estate a new name… making it the Chinese form of the English word cooling, so that the name might describe its destined use.” ES Little, The Story of Kuling. Mr. Little was a clever British Missionary, acquired the land in 1895

33 Lushan Institute Summer 2013 - Nanjing University Credit Classes Taught by professors from Nanjing University's Institute for International Students. Nanjing University's Institute for International Students A. Mandarin Chinese Language Beginning Instruction hours: 16 hrs./week, Credits: 4 Comprehensive Chinese + Communicating Chinese - Instruction in understanding, speaking, reading, & writing - For students with no or little previous Chinese experience - Students learn ~200 characters B. Mandarin Chinese Language Intermediate Instruction hours: 16hrs./week, Credits: 4 Comprehensive Chinese + Communicating Chinese - Designed for students who passed the beginning level or have a vocabulary > 500 words. - Continues to develop understanding, speaking, reading & writing. - Students required to comprehend and produce paragraph-level Chinese - And will be able deal with daily-life related Chinese in daily life

Chinese History and Culture Instruction hours: 4 hrs./week, Credits: 2 - General introduction to Chinese civilization providing an understanding of China in a historical context. - Formation of the nation, dynasty history, cultural features, and other major events - Students will be encouraged to investigate local history and will include a visit to Mao’s “Lushan Conferences” Museum D.Cultural Electives – calligraphy, tai chi, Chinese painting, poetry etc. E.Trips and Excursions - Three Step Falls, Mao, Pearl Buck and Chiang Kai Shek Villas, White Deer Grotto, Monkey Valley, Lushan Conference Museum, Villa Museum, Monkey Valley and Dragons Head, Immortals Cave, the Gap, Kuling American School etc.
