M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach The Outreach Program An Outreach Program will aim at explaining to the largest possible public the challenges of to-day physics research ….. hoping to attract young people into the field. In the case of EUSO, the aim of the Outreach program is to make the experiment known in circles as large as possible and through EUSO to promote an example of Research in development. There are two levels of action: MCM’02 Scientific Community Scientific Community General Audience General Audience Educational … Educational … EUSO Community EUSO Community Several initiatives can be thought of depending on the public to be addressed. information to develop interest in the general public about science and technology education to reach the young people within the educational system

M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach The EUSO collaboration being widespread in the world, it is important that “national” pages be developed with links to a central version. Such pages should include a general presentation of the experiment giving the translation of an “official” page, but could be complemented by regional news. 5 M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach Society at large … information … Note: articles in newspapers touch a larger audience but they can only be envisaged in the rare case of « an event » for example at the time of the launch of the telescope Articles in popular scientific magazines (the collaboration with scientific journalists is here of fundamental importance) A series of public conferences and lectures, radio and television presentations These exhibits will be devoted to serve a large class of the general interested public and can be properly duplicated for dissemination around the countries participating to EUSO. such as airports, commercial centers, public gardens… one could think of a set of 100 large photos exploring various aspects of research from the infinitely small to the infinitely large. These photos can be found at the Space Agencies, … A display of large photographs in public areas A book on “EUSO and the cosmic rays” several new collections of cheap scientific books have sprung recently. Editors are willing to publish such a book at author’s expenses

Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach Society at large … information … this should start right at the beginning of Phase B and it will be included in the EUSO Web Official Site pages. A series of movies tracing the progress of the experiment since its beginning Exhibitions at scientific museums A model of the experiment is being prepared by a group of students belonging to the “Lycée Blaise Pascal” of Longuenesse in the North of France. It represents a rotating earth observed by a model of the Space Station. Cosmic rays are materialized by a bunch of optical fibers which light up when reaching the atmosphere. When completed with a link to a PC, this model will be available for display in scientific museums. It could constitute the focus of an exhibition on cosmic rays among other examples of cloud chambers, spark chambers, scintillator counters,... … Information  Education

M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach Teachers … education … In particular this material could be given to Scientific Clubs which exist in some secondary schools. It is also important to offer courses or activities to teachers in their educational program. Pamphlets and books with simple explanations and photographs should be prepared to be sent to teachers Training through the Global HOU Program Global HOU has a growing presence in many EUSO nations. Germany has over 100 HOU teachers, Japan has about 100, France about 20 now, (with many more soon), Italy has about 15, but should soon be embarking on a much more ambitious program, and the US has about 500 teachers. This provides a nearly immediate portal into classrooms for EUSO. With good teacher and student materials, to be developed and shared by the International EUSO collaboration, a robust and exciting program will ensue

M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach Cosmic rays in schools … education … Cosmic rays shower everywhere on earth, and they are easy detectable for the most common of them. To reach the young public, it is proposed to set-up arrays of detectors to measure the flux and some properties of cosmic rays in schools. This allows to discuss several aspects of physics both theoretical and experimental. In such an endeavour, students must feel as actors of research. Several initiatives in the US (CROP project in the State of Nebraska, Chicanos in Los Angeles, …), more recently in Germany, France, Poland, … have been started. The aim of the American project is to equip up to several hundred schools for a total budget of 1.3 million US dollars granted from NSF. EUSO scientists are collaborators or in communication with these projects. Arrays of detectors

M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach … education … Theme addressed: Cosmic rays in schools Arrays of detectors (cnt’d) Experience shows that students react very positively at such a presentation. They also appreciate the fact that a researcher takes the time to visit them. Cosmic rays, origin, nature. This requires to define the notions of flux, energy, elementary constituents Interactions in the atmosphere. This requires to define the notions of cross section, nature of secondaries, lifetime, particles, antiparticles Detection. This requires to define the notions of scintillation, photo-multiplier tubes, signal propagation, coïncidences, tele-communications

M.C. Maccarone, EUSO General Meeting, Huntsville, 19-23 May 2003 E ducation P ublic O utreach Key-people Scientists. They provide the contents and are actively and directly involved in carrying on the programme Educational Technologists. They can be considered as the bridge between scientists and teachers/educators, which adopt the new Information and Communication Technologies for their didactic activities Web Designers, Web Masters, Multimedia Experts. They are necessary to produce well-established web pages and to maintain the web site, as required in fulfilling the EUSO-EPO purposes Teachers and Educators. Their expertise is necessary to ensure that high quality products reach the greatest number of students as well as educational activity be aligned to the national education standards and curricula EPO Professionals in other cultural and informal education institutions. Museums, science and technology centres, planetariums and other similar organisations supply outreach activities and can reach a broad and general audience Public Outreach Professionals and Scientific Journalists. Their expertise is indeed necessary to the dissemination of the scientific culture, via TV or via scientific magazines and newspapers
