FALL BAC TRAINING ALTERNATE K-PREP JESSICA LYONS FALL 2015

WHAT’S NEW... Alternate K-PREP Aligned to KCAS Science Standards were identified for instruction, determined which order to teach for windows 1 and 2. Standards were expanded to better serve instruction and item development for the Alternate K-PREP Science Assessment. Released to teachers in August. Transition Attainment Record had new science standards incorporated into the assessment (grade 11 only) for the 2015-16 school year. Science on the TAR is not part of accountability. TAR no longer administered at grades 8 and 10 (ACT Explore and ACT Plan removed).

TRAINING PROVIDED BY KDE All trainings will be web-based trainings; they will follow the same format as last year. Combined Overview/AT trainings/quiz are required every year for anyone who will administer the Attainment Tasks. Transition Attainment Record (TAR) training / quiz is required every year for anyone who will administer the TAR. A certification quiz will be required for the training. BACs MUST collect this certificate of successful completion before providing Attainment Tasks Materials.

ASSESSMENT TRAININGS Overview/AT Training August 17 – October 23, 2015 Transition Attainment Record Training September 14, 2015 – May 13, 2016

IMPORTANT POINTS TO ADDRESS DURING TRAINING  Test Security – double locked  One to One Administration  Complete online training and qualification quiz  Untimed tasks Administration Code and Inclusion of Special Populations Training for Kentucky’s Alternate K-PREP Teachers and Instructional Assistants

ALTERNATE K-PREP SYSTEMS HOME PAGE Direct Link to: Online Training System (OTS) Teacher’s will complete the quiz. Student Registration Database (SRD) Houses student scores from both the Attainment Tasks (AT) and the Transition Attainment Record (TAR). Tracks communication progress for students through the Learner Characteristics Inventory (LCI). More information, including a manual, will be available later this fall.

ALIGNMENT OF STANDARDS The Alternate Assessment aligns with grade level content standards assessed in grades 3 - 8 as well as high school. Kentucky is required by federal law to assess all students using these content standards; however the Alternate Assessment addresses the standards in a format that is modified based on the severity of students’ needs.

Grade Level/ Content Area KCAS Standard Alternate K-PREP Aligned Content Standards Grade 3 Reading R-3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as a basis for the answers. READING STANDARDS FOR LITERATURE Answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text. R-3.2 Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. READING STANDARDS FOR INFORMATIONAL TEXT Compare and contrast the most important points in two texts on the same topic. Order of Instruction

ADAPTATIONS TO MATERIALS You are advised to allow teachers access to the materials before they begin administering the assessment. The intent is to make any needed changes to the tasks that will allow the student access to the materials per the type of adaptation they require.

EXAMPLES OF ACCOMMODATIONS The Student uses in instruction:Then it is acceptable to: eye gaze boardplace picture symbols on the board words without picturesprovide choices without the pictures verbal directions to start and continue a taskprovide verbal directions as long as it is not cueing the student to the correct answer large print copiesmake a large print copy orientation to materials (e.g., assisting the student in touching each choice while telling him/her what it reads and then asking the student to select the answer) orient the student to the materials as long as no cueing to the correct answer is given – read response options, point to or touch objects prior to asking question physical support to aid independent movement (e.g., support at elbow so student can move hand left to right) provide physical support as long as it is not physically guiding the student to the correct answer

TAR/CCR The College and Career Readiness advisory group for the 1% is currently working on details for alternate assessment students to demonstrate college/career readiness. The career readiness components are still being designed. The TAR score represents the ACT benchmark as part of College and Career Readiness.

TRANSITION ATTAINMENT RECORD (TAR) Released on September 14 and will remain open until May 13. (No longer given at grades 8 and 10) Assessed for ACT at grade 11. One member from the Admissions and Release Committee (ARC) or the Transition Team must be trained to complete the TAR. TAR will be provided (online) after the quiz has been completed. Teacher may print TAR and share with members. TAR scores are submitted online.

GRADE 12 & 14- TAR Available for grade 12 and 14 students who did not meet benchmark in Reading or Mathematics  Reading- 19  Mathematics-16 No science assessment required at grades 12 and 14 If a student plans to stay beyond the grade 12 assessment, they should be coded as grade 14 in IC. Grade 12 and 14 students who have not met the benchmark for the TAR may take the grade 11 TAR assessment again to assist them in meeting the required scores for CCR readiness. This can be completed ONCE per year. TAR meets CCR requirements for Alternate Assessment students.

COLLEGE-CAREER READINESS DASHBOARD BAC Directions Website: https://spportal.jefferson.kyschools.us/bi/slc/CCR/Pages/Home.aspx Report: Student ACT-COMPASS-KYOTE Tracking Access the CCR Dashboard. The Transition Attainment Record (TAR) scores will be added to the Dashboard for Grades 12 and 14. Tips for TAR PowerPoint will be sent in an email to BACs and teachers. Notify the teachers of any students that did not meet the TAR in a previous year. Notify Jessica Lyons (Jessica.lyons@jefferson.kyschools.us) in the Testing Unit with a list of students that will be re-taking the TAR during the 2015-2016 school year.
