2 Introduction Basketball NSW Basketball NSW adopts the Motion Offence as its base team offensive teaching tool within the suite of development programs. The concepts of purposeful player movement (cutting), ball movement, spacing and penetration of the ball into the key are important aspects of the offence. We feel this is the best system to achieve our goals of multi-skilling young players and providing development opportunities.

3 Base Teaching Concepts Teaching through the 4 out, 1 in motion offence Breakdowns – 2 v 0, 2 v 2, 3 v 0, 3 v 3 Drills linked to concepts Fundamental teaching linked to team concepts Concept of “teach it, play it” Consistency of terms and teaching points

4 The Whole 4 out, 1 in, “high and wide” spacing 2 guard front Post positioned at mid- post 3-4 metre spacing between players “1 st side” – all about cutting at pace

5 The “Parts” Cutting – speed of cuts is paramount Teaching through motion specific breakdowns 2 man game – 2 v 0, 2 v 2 3 player concepts – cutting action Post action Receiver rules Floor spots

6 Key Terms “Speed” cut – cut executed without an influence set up “Exit” cut – basket cut that turns out to the ball-side “Through” – basket cut that turns out away from the ball “Lift” – cut (or dribble) that fills space behind initial cutter or penetrator “Fill behind” – cut that replaces penetrator on the drive to the basket “Middle flow” penetration – dribble penetration through the foul-line or over the “high shoulder” “Straight line drive” – the importance of penetrating in direct lines, not on curves “Chest over knee” – the stance required on cuts or dribble penetration “Dead corner” – position in the corner opposite the ball

7 “The First Side” Pass & cut at speed Put pressure on the rim through cutting, early dribble penetration or post feed Quick transference to the 2 nd side (“Punch” action)

8 The “2 nd side” Screening/hard cutting to create space and force opponent to defend Use of the “flare screen” Reading the defence/cutting with purposes

9 “Floor spots” On penetration of the ball into the key, we want 4 players moving to open areas Our receiver principles are a combination of traditional receivers’ rules and filling “floor spots” Penetrating player must “drive to score” Ability to pass on the move key Movement to floor spots is a cut and must be done at speed and with intent

10 Breakdowns “Lift” & fill behind Slide “down the hill” Base-line drive, “fill behind”“Fill behind” on post side drive
