S = SPECIFIC M = MEASURABLE A = ATTAINABLE R = REALISTIC/RELEVANT T = TIMEBOUND & TRACKABLE SMART GOAL

It is the what, by whom, where and when. Sometimes it may even state why it is important. SPECIFIC

Includes amounts, times of days, number of minutes, sec., hours, etc. and other milestones for gauging success- ex. I want to run the mile in under 7 minutes. been said that what can’t be measured can’t be managed. MEASURABLE

Be reasonable/realistic: is your plan attainable given what is presently happening in your life? ATTAINABLE/ACHIEVABLE

Be sure your plan is meaningful/important to you. Do those things that are most important and in line with your long term mission. RELEVANT

Record your progress regularly to measure your achievements. Must have an end point. TRACK-ABLE TIMEBOUND

What do you do well? What do you enjoy doing? What are the most important things in your life? 1. Understand Yourself

A goal should tell you exactly what you want and should be measurable. For example: I want to score 10 lacrosse goals this season. “10 goals” is clear and specific. 2. Make clear, specific Goals

Say “ I want to lose 5 pounds by Christmas” rather than “I don’t want to be so fat.” 3. Goals Should Be Positive

Give yourself a reasonable deadline in which to accomplish your goal. 4. Set Time Limits

If your ultimate goal is to be a professional basketball player, a realistic, specific short-term goal would be to make the varsity basketball ball team. 5. Break Long Term Goals Down Into Smaller Parts

Keeping your written goals where you can see them will help keep you focused on achieving them. 6. Write Your Goals Down

Evaluate your progress towards your goals. Are you doing what needs to be done to meet your goals? If not, what can you do to get back on target? 7. Check Your Progress
