Purpose of Inequalities Inequalities are useful when setting boundaries for acceptable outcomes: –We need to raise at least $30 selling hamburgers and hotdogs. –Sally can spend no more than $50 at the store –The restaurant has a maximum capacity of 54 people. –Joe must run a minimum of 5 miles today

1) Mindy has $400 from graduation presents. She wants to buy some new clothes for college. Shirts cost $35, and pants cost $45. Write a mathematical expression for the number of shirts, s, and pants, p, Mindy can buy with her graduation money.

2) Harris has $20.92 to spend on video- game rentals at a local video store. The store charges $3.95 per video-game rental plus an 8.125% tax. Write an equation for the maximum number of video games that Harris can rent.

3) At Southwest Electronics CDs cost $5.00 per package, and DVDs cost $10.00 per package. Write an equation for the number of CDs and DVDs that can be purchased for $55 or less.

4) An oyster provides approximately 17 calories, and a shrimp provides approximately 26 calories. Jay wants to consume no more than 300 calories eating oysters and shrimp. Write an equation for the number of oysters, o, and shrimp, s, that Jay can eat to stay within this limit?
