Directions  A few of the study guide problems will be solved on the following slides.  Your job is compare your own solution to my solution shown on the slide to determine whether you agree or disagree.  If you should disagree, then we will discuss why and find the correct answer.

Problem 2  Describe how to simplify the expression 3x – 6y + 7 – 8y – x – 3.  I added my like terms together and got an answer of 4x-14y+10. DISGREE: Answer is 2x – 14y + 4

Problem 3 3(a - 2b) – 2(3a + 2b) 3(a) + 3(-2b) – 2(3a) – 2(2b) 3a + -6b – 6a – 4b 3a – 6a + -6b – 4b -3a – 10b AGREE

Problem 5 2 + 2x = -56 – 2 2x = -58 2 2 x = 29 DISAGREE: x = -29

Problem 7 3x + 9 ≥ - 27 – 9 – 9 3x ≥ 36 3 3 x ≥ 12 DISAGREE: x ≥ -12

Problem 8 -3x + 5 < 20 – 5 – 5 -3x < 15 -3 -3 x > -5 AGREE

Problem 9  To play in the bouncy castle at the school carnival, one must be shorter than 45 inches tall. Write an inequality to represent h, the required height to play in the bouncy castle. h > 45 inches DISAGREE: h < 45 inches

Problem 10  “Five more than the product of a number and eight is equal to three.” 8n + 5 = 3 AGREE

Problem 13  James has spent $15.00 of his $50.00 video store gift card. He plans on using the remaining balance to rent video games. If the games cost $3.50 each to rent, how many games can he rent?

Problem 17  You have $100 to spend on clothes. Jeans cost $35 and t-shirts cost $12 without any added tax.  Write an inequality to find out how many pairs of jeans you can purchase if you buy 1 t-shirt.  Write a second inequality to find out how many t - shirts you can purchase if you buy 1 pair of jeans.  Solve each inequality.  Explain your answers.

Problem 17  Inequality 1 - One T-shirt $100 ≥ $35 ∙ j + $12 ∙ (1) 2.51 ≥ t or t ≤ 2.51  Solution 2 pairs of jeans can be purchased  Explanation The most pairs of jeans that we can buy with the remaining money is 2 pairs. Buying more than 2 pairs of jeans would give us a total cost more than $100.  Inequality 2 – One Pair of Jeans $100 ≥ $35 ∙ (1) + $12 ∙ t 5.42 ≥ t or t ≤ 5.42  Solution 5 t-shirts can be purchased  Explanation ______________________

Correct Answers  3) 2x – 14y + 4  4) -8x – 8  5) x = -29  6) x = 3  7) x ≥ -12  8) x > -5  9) h < 45 inches  10) n = -1/4  11) n = 49/3  12) Kyle rides 6 miles  13) He can rent 10 games  14) D. x > -9  15) C. $15.50  16) A. $100 + $10h ≥ $450
