Oldest of seven children. Born in Brooklyn to Irish immigrants; returned to Limerick, Ireland, where he grew up. Lost sister and twin brothers to pneumonia- type diseases Lived in filthy slum-like conditions Father abused alcohol and eventually abandoned family Mother raised children

Frank McCourt Frank caught typhoid fever when he was 10 and was quarantined in a fever hospital. “Typhoid Fever” is his autobiographical account of the disease. “Typhoid Fever” is an excerpt from McCourt’s autobiographical novel Angela’s Ashes (named after his mother). –The novel chronicles his life growing up in poverty- stricken Limerick, Ireland. –It won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize and was on bestseller lists for weeks. Died in July 2009 of melanoma.
