According to a study in the College Student Journal Stress among college students can be attributed to both Intrapersonal and interpersonal situations as well as academic and environmental issues Students in the study indicated that academic issues of increased workload and lower performance then expected were the biggest contributors to student stress. One way to accomplish all of your requirements, lessen stress, and increase your success is to use time management/budgeting strategies. Ross, S.E., Niebling, B.C., and Heckert, T.M. (1999). Group leader take materials from the bucket and place on the table. Choose one student to record what the group says as they work to complete the task. You must completely fill the large container leaving no space. You must use all of the large rocks. You must use at least some amount of sand, water and blue marbles. Fill the Container

When you have completed the task, replace the lid to indicate completion. You must work carefully and thoughtfully. You have 5 minutes to plan and complete the task…..GO!!!! Fill the Container

Large container = Each day Rocks = Large tasks such as academics and educational requirements (set in stone!) Blue Marbles = Daily activities Sand = Fun Water = What is left to accomplish Debrief

Recorders read the comments made during the activity to your group. As a group discuss the connections between your comments and how they relate to the topic of Time Budgeting as you now understand the meaning of the elements in the activity Recorder write your groups conclusions on the large white paper and post once the conversation is complete. Steps to follow for successful Time Management/Budgeting Plan each day. Prioritize your tasks. Say no to nonessential tasks. Delegate. Take the time you need to do a quality job Break large, time-consuming tasks into smaller tasks. Practice the 10-minute rule. Evaluate how you're spending your time. Limit distractions. Get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Take a break when needed.

Block out the following on your weekly calendar handout Class meetings Meals Naps/down time Activities with mandatory meetings (sports, practice) Exercise 3 hours x # of credits for homework Preparing your calendar
