14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School What can cause fires? –cigarettes – careless teenagers thinking the cigarette is out when it’s not, also people falling asleep with the cigarette in hand –careless cooking – not paying attention, towel goes into the flames, little kids pull the handle of the pots, grease goes flying –flammable materials – materials that are able to catch fire easily (i.e. paint, old newspapers, rags) –electrical overload – a dangerous situation in which too much electrical current flows along a single circuit

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School How can you prevent fires? –Don’t fall asleep while smoking –Keep stoves and ovens clean –Never put electrical cords under carpets or rugs –Be sure the cigarette is completely out before throwing away –Don’t smoke smoke alarms – devices that sound an alarm when they sense smoke

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School When should we use water to put out a fire and when should we not? –Yes use water: paper, wood, cloth –Do NOT use water: oil, grease, electricity Design a family evacuation plan –If you have a two story house have some way of getting out the window and down safely

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School What do you do when there is a fire? 1.Call 911 2.Immediately leave the house if possible 3.Feel a door, if it’s hot, don’t open it, because the fire is probably on the other side 4.If you can’t get out of the room, put a big towel or blanket, rolled up, against the bottom of the door 5.If the fire is on you, stop, drop, and roll 6.Once outside and safe, do not go back in

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School Preventing Injuries: –Clean up spills right away –Use a step stool –Put a bath mat on the bottom of the shower –Stair rail tight –Stair gates for children at the top and bottom of the staircase –Follow the school rules No running Walk on the right side of the hallway

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School Preventing Poisonings: –Do not call vitamins or medicine candy – the kid could overdose –Put all medicine in the medicine cabinets –Make sure each bottle has a child-restraint lid –Store in high cabinets Preventing electric shocks: –Don’t plug in something near anything wet –Replace cords with exposed wires –Cover the outlets with the plastic covers

14.2 Notes – Safety at Home & in School Gun safety: –Always assume that a gun is loaded, even when it may not be –Report anyone who you think has a gun –Follow school rules for weapons
