STARSS REGINA AND SURROUNDING AREA
2
STARSS ACTIVITIES Wendy came and did our on site training. Feb 2010 Balfour presentation about STARSS in Feb Every month we changed our STARSS posters on our childcare window and handouts at the front.
3
STARSS In June I had set up a training day for the other CPNP/CAPC that we have in Regina, as well as, Fort Qu’Appelle Reserve. Wendy was our presenter.
4
STARSS We had two days planned to do things with the children in the area one was cancelled do to rain. But the one day we did No Smoking posters with the kids which got laminated so they could hang in the window of there homes. June
5
STARSS I have done one on one training with a nurse who found out about the STARSS program through the web site. June Just before summer we did a combined group with our prenatal and postnatal on safety and we added STARSS and how can we protect our children from secondhand smoke exposure.

STARSS SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES Talking with the girls at Balfour went well, it stirred lots of conversation. Challenge: was to chat with the girls to fill in the Questioner in a few week later (didn’t happen seeing they come and go and some didn’t return to school). The posters have been seen by everyone that comes into the centre. (Young and old)
7
STARSS The training day went well the girls really enjoyed the day. It was a success 10 new people are now trained and are using the STARSS in there work place as well as with the home visitors.
8
STARSS The children enjoyed the poster making (I was unable to take part in this activity but the Nutritionist and Community worker that is in my office said that the kids had fun).
9
STARSS The Baby’s Best Start program girls asked lots of question with regards to family members that smoke and how they can prevent them from smoking around the kids. Challenge: I have found it hard to do more promotion of the program. Getting people excited in doing the class. I had put into our newsletter which will stay in the newsletter all the time (it is put out 3 to 4 times a year). Time is a big challenge seeing we have so many programs running already.
10
STARSS Plans for the Future I have been asked to a Mother’s Retreat out on the Reserve and I will have a booth with STARSS information. I have another training day with more home health workers and the staff out in the Files Health Region (Federal Reserve Health District). With 10 more health workers.
11
STARSS Continue to promote the program in our centre. We will continue to make bags to give our new admissions that are smokers. Do more crafts with the kids that are in childcare with Baby’s Best Start.
