Multiple Intelligence
The research of Howard Gardner
2
Who is Howard Gardner? Researcher, behaviorist
3
What is Multiple Intelligence
A theory that suggests that the traditional method of assessing intelligence, IQ testing, is far to limited proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults.
4
The Seven Types of Multiple Intelligence
Linguistic intelligence ("word smart") Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart") Spatial intelligence ("picture smart") Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart) Musical intelligence ("music smart") Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart") Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
5
Linguistic Intelligence
involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to accomplish certain goals. This intelligence includes the ability to effectively use language to express oneself rhetorically or poetically; and language as a means to remember information. These learners have highly developed auditory skills and are generally elegant speakers. They think in words rather than pictures.
6
Auditory Learner’s Skills
Listening, speaking, writing Story telling, explainig, teaching Using humor Understanding the syntax and meaning of words, analyzing language usage Remembering information Convincing someone of their point of view
7
Auditory Learner’s Possible Career Interests
Poet, writer, journalist Teacher, translator Lawyer, politician
8
Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
Ability to use reason, logic and numbers Consists of the capacity to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. It entails the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking. Learners like to ask lots of questions and like to do experiments.
9
Logical Learner’s Skills
Problem solving, doing controlled experiments Classifying and categorizing information Working with abstract concepts to figre out the relationship of each to the other Handling long chains of reason to local progressions Performing complex mathematical calculations, working with geometric shapes
10
Logical Learner’s Possible Career Interests
Scientists, researchers Computer programmers Engineers, mathematicians Accountants
11
Musical Intelligence Ability to produce and appreciate music
Involves skill in the performance, composition, and appreciation of musical patterns. Encompasses the capacity to recognize and compose musical pitches, tones, and rhythms. According to Howard Gardner musical intelligence runs in an almost structural parallel to linguistic intelligence.
12
Musical Intelligence Skills
Singing, whistling, playing musical instruments Recognizing tonal patterns Composing music Remembering melodies Understanding the structure and rhythm of music
13
Musical Intelligence Possible Career Interests
Musician Disc Jockey Singer Composer
14
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
Entails the potential of using one's whole body or parts of the body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities to coordinate bodily movements and handle objects skillfully. Howard Gardner sees mental and physical activity as related.
15
Kinesthetic Intelligence Skills
Dancing, sports, physical co-ordination Hands on experimentation Using body language, acting, miming Crafts, using their hands to create and build Expressing emotions through the body
16
Kinesthetic Intelligence Possible Career Interests
Athletes, dancers, actors Physical education teachers Firefighters, artisans
17
Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Involves the potential to recognize and use the patterns of wide space and more confined areas. Learner tend to think in pictures and create vivid mental images to retain information They enjoy looking at maps charts, pictures and videos
18
Visual Learner’s Skills
Puzzle building, reading, writing, understanding charts and graphs Good sense of direction, constructing, fixing, interpreting visual images, designing practical projects Sketching, painting, manipulating images, creating visual metaphors and analogies (perhaps through the visual arts)
19
Visual Learner’s Possible Career Interests
Navigators Sculptors, Visual Artists Inventors Architects, Interior Designers Mechanics, Engineers
20
Interpersonal Intelligence
Is concerned with the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people. It allows people to work effectively with others.
21
Interpersonal Intelligence Skills
Seeing things from other perspectives Listening, counseling Understanding other people’s moods and feelings Cooperating in groups, building trust Communicating both verbally and non-verbally Peaceful conflict resolution Establishing positive relations with others
22
Interpersonal Intelligence Possible Career Interests
Educators, counselors Salespeople, business person religious and political leaders
23
Intrapersonal Intelligence
entails the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one's feelings, fears and motivations. In Howard Gardner's view it involves having an effective working model of ourselves, and to be able to use such information to regulate our lives.
24
The Seven Types of Multiple Intelligence
Linguistic intelligence ("word smart") Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart") Spatial intelligence ("picture smart") Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart) Musical intelligence ("music smart") Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart") Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
25
The Left Brain versus Right Brain Theory of Intelligence
26
The Right-Brain versus Left-Brain Theory
Difference in learning styles is based on the dominant side of the brain Dominant side of the brain is the opposite of the dominant hand trait. Right- Brain thinkers are LEFT handed Left-Brain thinkers are RIGHT handed
27
Right Brain Thinkers Tend to be creative
Good at coming up with new ideas Artists, poets and composers
28
Left-Brain Thinkers Orderly in their thought process
Follow rules, organize events There are more left-brain thinkers than right brain thinkers All professions
29
Intelligence vs. Learning Style
The idea that there are many ways to illustrate intellectual strengths is Multiple Intelligence The idea that different people have various ways to learn new material is called Learning Styles
30
Learning Styles Learning styles can be broken into two main categories
Active Reflective
