3 The Pilgrims Puritans left England in Sept., 1620, to escape religious persecution –121 people sailed on the Mayflower – ½ were Puritans Reached Plymouth, Mass., in December, 1620 –Wrote the Mayflower Compact 3

4 The Pilgrims Pilgrims had a tough time surviving the first winter –Were helped by Squanto and the Wampanoag Indians Had the first Thanksgiving to celebrate survival 4

5 Dutch Exploration Smaller European countries also wanted to get involved in exploration –Dutch settled New Netherland (New York) in 1614 and Zwaanendael (Lewes, DE) in 1631 Both settlements were eventually wiped out 5

6 Swedish Exploration Swedes settled Fort Christiana, DE in 1638 –Present-day Wilmington, DE –Kalmar Nyckel brought Swedish settlers in 1640 Settlement was eventually taken over by the English 6
