1 Dark Age Europe Based on the Braveheart clip and this picture, list 4 characteristics that you would associate with the Dark Ages great power of Catholic Church Gothic architecture No social mobility Little progress in economics, education, technology No centralized government

2 What are the Middle Ages? Period in Europe between about 500- 1500 Also known as Medieval Time Period Divided into 3 sub periods –Early Middle Ages-500AD-1000AD (Dark Ages) –High Middle Ages-1000AD-1300AD –Late Middle Ages 1300AD-1500AD

3 The Germanic Tribes Where did they come from? Probably from Scandinavia Settled North of Danube and East of Rhine circa 750 BC Gradually migrated throughout northern Europe

4 Question: Why are they migrating so much?

5 Family and Cultural Values Semi-nomadic Valued warriors Paterfamilias –But respected women Family most important –Multiple families made up a clan –Multiple clans made up a tribe Tribes united in event of war

6 Economy and Government Part-time farmers/part-time warriors Extremely individualistic Local chiefs and elders made laws Justice carried out by injured party’s family –Trial by Ordeal Accused person was placed in danger to determine guilt or innocence –Wergeld- $ to compensation for murder

7 Social Structure 1.King- powerful chief 2.Noble- soldier w/ land loyal to king 3.Freeman- small farmer 4.Serfs- peasants bound to land 5.Slaves- captured in raids

9 Objective Through the use of the remaining dark ages slideshow and the reading on illuminations, you will be able to describe what resources were used to make illuminations, who created illuminations, what superstitious people believed illuminations represented AND illustrate your own illumination.

15 Purpose of Illuminations Most people could not read To spread Christianity, the educated would read the stories to the public in town squares and use the illustrations to emphasize the main points.

16 The Colors The colors for illuminations were primarily reds and golds. Purples and blues were very expensive and considered colors of loyalty. As a result, these colors along with greens were minimally used.

17 Ticket – Out What two resources were used to make the books of illuminations? Who was responsible for writing/illustrating the illuminations? What did superstitious people believe the books represented?
