DATENovember 1975 NAMEDEATH OF FRANCISCO FRANCO DESCRIPTION The death of Francisco Franco who became the first Spanish “generalisimo”/ dictator. From 1939 on, Franco was a dictator. His rule was law. Franco’s Spain displayed all the usual characteristics of a right wing dictatorship. All opposition was ruthlessly dealt with and there were thousands of civil losses. IMPORTANCE When he died in November 1975, the monarchy was restored when Prince Juan Carlos became head of state, so this meant the end of the dictatorship and its lack of freedom. It was enacted after the 1978 referendum, as part of the Spanish transition to democracy. It was preceded by many previous constitutions of Spain.
