5
The Private Students: selected based on certain attributes -Religion -Gender -Academics -etc
6
The Private Parents - can not ask the government to intervene in school board decisions - elect members of the school society - pay for tuition, within accredited schools there is funding however only 60-70% of what public schools get
7
The Private Teachers - cannot be members of the ATA - one study showed each 12-15% lower wages - have less stress than public school teachers because they work less
8
The Public Definition: – primary and secondary schooling offered to all children without charge – costs are covered in part or whole by taxation
9
The Public Characteristics -Mandatory attendence until the age of 16 to 18 (in Canada based on the province) -Teachers are certified by the government and part of the ATA -Testing and standards are provided by the government -Ex) PATs
10
The Public In Canada … -By the Constitution, schools are provincially managed In Australia … -Schools are run by the respective state government In Sweden … -State school (primary, secondary and universities) are covered by taxation. -University students may have to pay for accommodation.

15
The Charter A little bit of History … -Legislation was enacted in 1994 to enable charter schools in the province of Alberta -Alberta is the only province in Canada to have charter schools to this day -There are 22 charter schools in Alberta -May not have a religious affiliation
16
The Charter In Alberta … -6 schools in Calgary -3 schools in Edmonton -4 schools in smaller rural communities
17
The Charter Ardrossan: – New Horizons Charter School is designed for gifted children and was the first public charter school to open in Canada, established in 199
18
The Charter So what exactly is a charter? Definition: -an agreement between the Minister of Education and an individual or group regarding the establishment and administration of a charter school. The charter describes the unique educational service the school will provide, how the school will operate and the student outcomes that it intends to achieve.
19
The Charter Curriculum: -Structured around the basic education system by Alberta Education -Students must write provincial achievement test, diplomas, and any another test admixture by the Ministry
20
The Charter The Staff - Teachers must be certificated - Teachers are subject to applicable professional codes of conduct -ex) Labour Relations Code and the Employment Standards Code
21
The Charter What about Teachers and the ATA? - If the school decides to hired their own teachers they can not be active members of the ATA However - a charter board may choose to second a teacher from a school board or employ a teacher who has taken a leave of absence from the school board. In both cases, the teacher remains an employee of the school board and is required to be an active member of the ATA.
