Met 4 times since Sept 2012 Carried out a Cardio Lite (Collaborative Assessment of Research and Data Infrastructure and Objectives) exercise within Task Force And then with Directors of Research Online Cardio exercise for Computing and Maths and Aquaculture. Face to face discussion with CSM to get in-depth information. Still to have face to face discussion with Aquaculture Results
3
Structured into 3 sections ◦ Organisation ◦ Technology ◦ Resources Across all the sections the average score was 3 or under Indicates significant improvements can be made to RDM at Stirling
4
Organisation Organisation most highly rated by IoA not the case for CSM Variability in practices by individuals and sub- units Data management left to Schools to determine Difficulty of sharing data between Schools/divisions recognised – results in use of web-based alternatives Low-awareness centrally of the types of local RDM solutions in place Metadata practices variable IP/Legal compliance policies/guidance available
5
CSM rated this more positively than IOA Concerns about central storage capacity and the functionality of the storage facility Concerns from IoA about local back-up for individuals with large amounts of data Greater notice of additional capabilities required by research staff needed by centre High confidence in back-up by centre Concern about security of cloud technologies Is additional storage being backed up? Data corruption not easily identifiable Gaps noted in security policy/practice Centre not aware what systems researchers use Encryption is recommended for personal data carried on portable media – practice is not known Lowest scores for lack of University data repository Lack of metadata tools\resources Technology
6
Resources Scores in this section were mainly low or unknown Central IS perceive that funding for RDM has not been considered. No resource allocation system for RDM Researchers report grants take RDM costs into account but funding cannot cover long-term storage costs Investment is needed in renewing the IT infrastructure Data management functionality could also be incorporated into future infrastructure development – more efficient management of research data Low awareness of the distribution of storage space was reported Ad hoc requests for additional storage were frequent Risk that not all requests can be filled Low scores were received for human resources Only a small number of individuals were skilled in RDM, and there were limited training opportunities in RDM
7
Several levels of practices regarding RDM exist: central, School/division, sub-units within these and the individual level. Disconnect between different levels of practices meaning that there is a lack of awareness of local practice at the central level and central provision and guidance at the local level; Institutional policies are currently lacking regarding RDM and awareness of those which do currently exist could be raised, A lack of sustainable funds to invest in IS infrastructure and RDM which the institution will need to tackle in order to meet funder requirements and to ensure appropriate provision for research being produced at Stirling; Staff skills and training could be improved; The high number of ‘don’t know’ responses throughout the exercise may indicate a need for raising awareness of RDM issues
8
Results suggest that Stirling is in a position where work needs to be done in order to meet Research Council’s specific requirements regarding RDM. More positively, results are positive with regard to the back up system and technological resources in place The over-riding concern is the storage space available centrally which requires either investment or more efficient usage and local practices which may not be safe or secure. Overall, one of the key issues continues to be that of creating better data management guidance, better communicating and monitoring this.
