MARTIN LUTHER KING MEMORIAL
The memorial is on the Tidal Basin on the National Mall in D.C. It is in a straight line halfway between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial, which creates a visual “line of leadership” with two other Americans who worked to secure citizens’ freedoms. The centerpiece of the memorial is called the “Stone of Hope.” It features a 30-foot likeness of King that is looking toward the Tidal Basin and the horizon. The Stone of Hope is cut out of a larger boulder called the “Mountain of Despair” that serves as the entryway to the memorial. The site contains a granite inscription wall that contains 14 of King’s most memorable quotes5 The memorial is designed to be a sensory experience. The designers used several elements — such as rock, water and landscape design — to create a visual, auditory and even tactile experience that is functional during all the seasons. It was originally scheduled to be dedicated on August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of his “I have a dream speech” but was postponed because of the threat of Hurricane Irene, until October 16, 2011, which was the 16th anniversary of the Million Man March. The Alamo On February 23, 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army arrived outside San Antonio. The Texians and Tejanos were not afraid and they prepared to defend the Alamo together. The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Anna's army. The defenders saw the Alamo as the key to the defense of Texas, and they were ready to give their lives rather than surrender their position to General Santa Anna. The final assault came before daybreak on the morning of March 6, 1836, as columns of Mexican soldiers came from the predawn darkness and headed for the Alamo's walls. Cannon and small arms fire from inside the Alamo prevented several attacks. The Mexicans regrouped and climbed the walls and rushed into the compound. Once they were inside they blasted open the barricaded doors. The struggle continued until the defenders were defeated. By sunrise the battle was over. People worldwide continue to remember the Alamo as a heroic struggle against impossible odds — a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. For this reason, the Alamo remains hallowed ground and the Shrine of Texas Liberty. Click HERE to return to slideshow.
