15 TH - 16 TH CENTURIES NORTHERN & ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
2
Northern Renaissance ART: -Centered in Germany, France and the Netherlands. -Flanders-capital of this movement -”Northern” means “North from Italy”. -Architecture was very important and present on paintings. -Intricate detail over anatomical perfection -Domestic interiors, portraits, religious scenes Attention to surface detail, naturalism and symbolic meanings. -Artists were very concerned in how their artwork looked like. Minute surface detail. -COLOR was very important above and beyond form. -Paintings were made with oil paints over wood panels. Italian Renaissance ART: -Centered in Italy. -Florence-capital of this movement. -Classical, Mythological and religious scenes. _Architecture not as important as in the Northern renaissance. -Symmetrical, balanced, good sense of mass, linear perspective. -Figures with mass and volume, knowledge of underlying anatomy. -Artists were more interested in principles of composition (perspective, proportion, anatomy) than in how their artwork looked like. Not as detail. -Fresco, tempera, oil.
