2 Slant Height The slant height is the distance from the base to the apex along the outside of the surface. The height of a pyramid or cone is from the base to the apex.

3 Pythagorean Theorem Vertical Cross Section of a Pyramid and Cone The height is one leg of a triangle and half the base is the other leg. The slant height is the hypotenuse Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse.

4 Practice Problem C Find the slant height. Sketch a right triangle to show the dimensions you used for your calculations.
