S TORAGE : K EEPING THE I NFORMATION Regular Reviews –Right after class – the sooner the better! –Before bed! –Weekly! –Getting ready for the test For storage to occur, information must be organized in some kind of meaningful way.

O UTPUT : R ETRIEVING THE I NFORMATION Self-quizzing Participating in class discussions and study groups Answering questions in class and during reading of textbooks Quizzes and tests

Mnemonics Mnemonics are Memory Aids –Rhymes, Rules, Raps, Phrases, Diagrams, Acronyms, etc. –All are intended to help students RECALL INFORMATION such as names, dates, facts and figures. –There are 9 types of Mnemonics!

Mnemonics: Music Make a song, rap, or jingle using any type of music to remember a list of items. –ABC song helps you remember your ABCs.

Mnemonics: Names The 1 st letter of each word in a list is used to make up a name of a person or thing. –Roy G. Biv = the colors of the rainbow!

Mnemonics: Expression or Word The 1 st letter of each item is arranged to form a word or phrase. Every Good Bird Can Fly.

Mnemonics: Ode & Rhyme Puts the information to be remembered in a poem. 30 days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31 but February’s the shortest one With 28 days most of the time, until Leap Year gives us 29. In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Mnemonics: Image The information is constructed in the form of a mental picture that promotes recall of information.

Mnemonics: Connection The new information is connected to something already known. Longitude & Latitude On a globe, N & S are long, which coincides with LONGitude. Mnemonics: Spelling Use the spelling of a word to help you remember. –A PrinciPAL at school is a pal. –A princiPLE you believe or follow is a rule.

Mnemonics: Note Organization The way textbook or lecture notes are organized can inhibit learning & recall or promote it. –Notecards –Flash cards –Outlining –Cornell System

Mnemonics: Model Some type of representation is constructed to help with understanding and recalling information.
