Word lists which give a guide to the words children should be able to spell confidently in each age range.

Lots of different spelling patterns for the same sound e.g. Late, weight, great Silent letters e.g. wrong Lots of words are not phonetic…they can’t be sounded out It can slow down children’s writing or limit want they want to say BUT!!!! 85% of the English language is predictable…if we practise the rules

Sounding out using letter sounds, not names. E.g. c-a-t sh-o-p

Playing word related games: I-spy, Hangman, Boggle, Scrabble, Odd One Out. Make it fun!

Read lots!!! Discuss spellings of words, usual spellings. E.g. what is surprising about the word photograph? Encourage looking more closely at words

Put the word in the context of a sentence. Helps to reinforce spelling and meaning. E.g. I’m going to their house after school.
