3  Word lists which give a guide to the words children should be able to spell confidently in each age range.

4  Lots of different spelling patterns for the same sound e.g. Late, weight, great  Silent letters e.g. wrong  Lots of words are not phonetic…they can’t be sounded out  It can slow down children’s writing or limit want they want to say  BUT!!!! 85% of the English language is predictable…if we practise the rules

5  Sounding out using letter sounds, not names.  E.g. c-a-t sh-o-p

6  Playing word related games: I-spy, Hangman, Boggle, Scrabble, Odd One Out.  Make it fun!

7  The name of a well know TV Programme  __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

8  Read lots!!! Discuss spellings of words, usual spellings.  E.g. what is surprising about the word photograph?  Encourage looking more closely at words

9  Put the word in the context of a sentence. Helps to reinforce spelling and meaning.  E.g. I’m going to their house after school.

10  How many words can you find in the grid?  Can you find a 4 letter word?  Can you put that word in a sentence?  How could we make this easier? Harder?  Which letters couldn’t you use and why? EUAKT SEYOL FDTIM ALGEB IORRY

11  Sounding out syllables e.g. wed-nes-day

12  Looking for words within words  E.g. there is a rat in separate.

13  Use lots of different media to build the word e.g. felt tips, play-doh, lego bricks.  What is your child interested in??
