Some definitions- A phoneme – This is the smallest unit of a sound in a word. How many phonemes can you hear in the word cat? A grapheme – These are the letters that represent the phoneme. The grapheme could be 1letter, 2 letters or more. We call these Sound Buttons.

CVC words are made up of single letter sounds. c-a-t d-o-g m-a-t b-e-d Blending and segmenting – splitting the words into their sounds and blending to read the unfamiliar word. n- igh-t t-r-ai-n sh-ee-p Sound buttons

1. Phonic knowledge 2. Little words in big words- e.g. Independent 3. Context, miss out and read words before/ after- what makes sense? 4. Look at the pictures for help.
