Things that affect your concentration. How self talk and motivation can affect your concentration. Finally SQRRR (Survey, question, read, recall, review) -the strategies to help you retain what you read for the D4K test.

Concentration Count how many times the people
First we are going to look at an interesting video that deals with concentration. Go onto the next slide for more information about this video. Count how many times the people in white shirts pass the ball.

What are your thoughts about the video and selective attention.
This video shows selective attention. When we focus on one task we can shut out other distractions. Selective attention gives us interesting information on how the mind works. When we pay close attention to one thing it effects how we perceive the surrounding world. Sometimes our minds do not work the way we think it does. Your Study Environment
This can affect your concentration. Excess stimuli like studying in a noisy public place may interfere with full concentration. Don’t try this at home!

Physical Distractions
Affect your physical ability to concentrate Poor Eating Habits Irregular sleep Mental Health Lack of exercise LACK OF SLEEP Certain parts of the brain will shut down when sleep deprived. Studies show someone who is well rested is better at mental tasks than someone who is not. LACK OF EXERCISE Several studies have shown that exercise improves memory, concentration, and thinking skills. Exercise has also shown that new blood vessels are formed in the brain with exercise. Exercise is so important for the brain, it is the number 1 non medication treatment for Alzheimer's disease. POOR EATING HABITS Both the heart and the brain rely on a good vascular network. Limit fried carbohydrates due to repetitive microscopic vascular injury. Eating anti-oxidant rich foods- fruits and vegetables helps to keep the brain healthy by reducing free radicals. Vitamins do not replace fruits and vegetables! Basically stay away from processed foods, anything in a can or package. The more natural the form of food the better it is for your body & brain. MENTAL HEALTH Life is difficult at times for all of us. CONCENTRATION us difficult during these times. Don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t concentrate, give yourself times each day to grieve. Divorce of parents. Break up of a boy/girl friend. Relationship issues with a friend. Death of a loved one.

Eating anti-oxidant rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, help to keep the brain healthy by reducing free radicals. Remember, vitamins do not replace fruits and vegetables! Basically stay away from processed foods, anything in a can or package. The more natural the form of food the better it is for your body & brain. Stay well hydrated with water.

Self Talk – What we say to ourselves in our thoughts.
What is your self talk? Is it negative or positive? Overly evaluative & critical self talk can affect concentration and eat away at our self esteem. We think in one extreme or the other, all good or all bad (if I’m not in time for school, I might as well as stay home. If what I do isn’t perfect, then I’m worthless). When we think that because 1 thing went wrong for us all things will go wrong for us and will continue to go wrong for us (getting a C on a test example). When we focus on one negative thing that happened & allow it to overshadow everything else (I didn’t get a blue ribbon so I must a terrible rider). When we ignore or discount, or minimize our positive experiences (you get an A on a quiz, your self talk is “it doesn’t matter, it is only a quiz). When we assume something negative when we have no definite facts to support our conclusion (“Amy didn’t call last night, she must be mad at me). When we make up a story about someone else’s actions and assume our story is accurate, so we don’t check it out. We think we know what the other person is thinking (Peter didn’t look at me today at lunch, so I know he doesn’t like me anymore).

How to Develop Positive Thoughts
Stop How to Develop Positive Thoughts Listen to what you are thinking If negative, say “STOP”. Replace it with a positive thought With practice & time the positive thoughts can take over. If you have trouble making the changes you want, you may need to see a professional that can help.

Motivation Motivation Lendon Gray Know why you are doing what you do.
You must want to do what you are doing. Lendon Gray Is a parent making you do it? Is it something you think you should do instead of wanting to do? Concentration may be effected if you are truly not motivated. Lendon is a great example of someone who is very motivated.

Survey, Question (objectives), Read, *Recall, *Review Spend most of your time on recall and not on reading. Recall and Review most important to retain knowledge. Developing study skills is a process. Just like a young horse needs time to become disciplined to concentrate on the rider. Concentration video Sometimes our minds do not work the way we think it does. Things that can affect concentration Study environment, study location, physical distractions (diet, sleep, exercise, mental health) All these factors can affect your concentration.
