1 Drone-supported Response Of NYC Emergency Services
An Innovative Solution to Improve Emergency Response Techniques Leo Y. Age: 10 New York

2 Each year there are 11 million 911 calls in New York City
That’s 20 calls per minute! More than half of these are non-emergency calls New York also has significant traffic congestion Which means that response times for 911 calls can be long

3 Past efforts to facilitate emergency response include…
The creation of Fire Lanes Training 911 personnel to screen calls Creating 311 (for non-emergency calls)

4 To create a fleet of drones to support 911 dispatchers
My solution is… To create a fleet of drones to support 911 dispatchers The drones would avoid traffic and reach the scene faster than first responders collect and transmit data and images to 911 and other first responders First responders will use that data and information to react to the emergency

5 How a drone network would work
2 3 1 3 4 Step 1: A call comes into to 911 call center Step 2: 911 dispatches drone & fire department Step 3: Drone quickly travels to the site of the emergency & reports to call center & fire department Step 4: Fire department can direct drone to report on traffic, sample the air, & take other actions 2

6 -Must be cost effective
GPS/Navigation: Radiation Detector: Air Sampler: Design of Drones: -Must be aerodynamic -Must be light -Must be strong -Must be cost effective Camera:

I tried to add monitoring-type equipment to a model drone to see if the drone would still be aerodynamic. Tour of Drone’s Features (Click on image to view) Actual Drone Videos (Click on image to view)

8 Helpful Feedback Comments/Suggestions: Improvements:
“Distribute the drones throughout New York City, it will make response time faster.”- Juliana There would be one drone at every checkpoint (e.g., every fire station). “All footage should be archived.”-Me As soon as the footage is sent back to the call center, it would immediately be saved and stored in chronological order. “Connect the data sent by the drone to the call center, as well.”-Sandy The data would be sent to the call center, as well as the Fire department.* *See “Sketch it” page for details

9 Drones would save both time and lives.
Traffic congestion in New York City is common, and it can be dangerous. In this series of events, one fire truck is delayed by another fire truck. According to witnesses: “…the fire trucks were stuck in the jam for five minutes…until a police car came.” The five minutes that the first responders lost could have been vital, lifesaving moments. Drones would save both time and lives.

10 Drones avoid traffic delays and can improve the quality and speed of emergency response.
Thank you
