INTD 51 refining the solution
2
professional grade drawings can be simple and unpretentious or complex and flamboyant—depending upon situation manner of completion determined by the nature of the project simply drawn preliminary plan quick-sketch black and white drawings formal, complex presentation fully rendered, colored, exhibit quality boards
3
the language of space planning is the floor plan—its graphic qualities cannot be entirely ignored transition from rough floor plan to preliminary to presentation quality is all part of the planning process—changes are made throughout
4
refining the rough plan requires significant review and evaluation— many drafts or phases developing the “final” preliminary plan is the concluding phase
5
“final” preliminary plan experiment with techniques—hand drafting/computer-aided drafting or a combination of the two by hand: use reasonably high-quality trace for ease in erasing work with a few types of pencil leads for line weights—door swing should read differently than a full height wall
6
“final” preliminary plan by hand: can be meticulously drafted or loose “freehand” dimensional accuracy is a MUST—a stud & drywall partition (4”) should not be mistaken for an 8” plumbing wall
7
“final” preliminary plan on computer: dimensional accuracy is much easier always keep in mind: type of line, line weight, poche graphics door swings, etc… this plan can eventually be used for the final presentation, so always be looking ahead
8
“final” preliminary plan major changes at this point are counterproductive minor changes—refinements rather than revisions—are possible and productive addition of incidental furnishings change of closet door from sliding to bi-fold minor relocation of a partition by a few inches to better accommodate furnishings relocation of a door to provide better access to a room
9
“final” preliminary plan as refinements are completed, the presentation plan drawing can be made fundamental element of typical interior design project presentation good drawing quality provides a readable floor plan and creates a positive impression on clients
12
bare-bones approach adequate computer aided free hand experiment with a combination of the two careful use of templates will save time

PARTICIPATION ACTIVITY: refining the plan using your rough floor plan as well as your kitchen, bath & storage drawings, refine the community center plan your goal is make this plan clear and legible we will use this plan next week to add further refinements such as materiality do not make any major changes

BINDER ASSIGNMENT: Section 13 design refinements & solutions using your rough floor plan as well as your kitchen, bath & storage drawings, refine the client floor plan your goal is make this plan clear and legible we will use this plan next week to add further refinements such as materiality do not make any major changes
