Olson” to access the library homepage 3. From the library homepage, click on “Find Articles” on the left hand side 4. Click on “Databases listed alphabetically.”

9. Finding Scholarly Articles 5. Under the letter E, click on “ERIC.” 6. Login 7. Under “Limit Your Results,” check “Peer reviewed.” 8. Use the search feature at the top to search- Depending on the topic/assignment, consider limiting your search to the last 10 years. You can also select “full text” to guarantee access to the entire article. To save articles for viewing later, you can download the article as a PDF and save it to your computer.

10. The Case Study Approach Case studies help to develop decision making skills through the exploration of how to apply scientific evidence to specific classroom practices.

11. Identifying Relevant Information Who? -characteristics of and relationships between of teachers, students, and parents. Pay attention to gender, ethnicity, disabilities, SES of students, etc. What? -identify the major problem(s) described in the case study. Is it behavioral, learning, instructional, classroom management? Each case may have more than one problem. Where? -consider where the events take place. Try to identify any of the characteristics of the location that might contribute to the problem. When? -identify time-relevant information and consider how that might be related to the main problem.

Assessing the Situation Consider: How you might respond to the situation What characteristics of the people involved contributed to the situation Why the solution described didn’t work very well Use the relevant information you found and the questions at the end of each case study to guide your thinking when creating your problem statement.

13. Finding a Solution Rely on the science-based evidence discussed in the module when coming up with relevant concepts and a solution. Consider how the problem and solution presented in the case if some aspects were changed. Ex) Gender or Ethnicity Use the questions at the end of the module to help guide your thinking when determining relevant concepts and the solution for your case study.
