Storage Considerations
Storage space needs to be adequate 10-15% of the home Should be convenient & easily accessible Should be incorporated throughout the entire home.
29
Storage Types: Built-in – Cannot be moved around the room, an architectural detail of the room Cupboards, Closets, Pantries, etc. Furniture – can be moved from one room to another Desks, Chests, Dressers, Trunks, Armoires, etc.
30
Traffic Patterns (aka: Circulation)
Traffic Pattern = the route people follow as they move from one place to another in the home. 3-4 ft. of space should be allowed for traffic paths. Traffic Frequency = the the number of times a route is repeated in any given period of time. A good floor plan will have short and direct routes to accommodate high traffic.
31
Types of Traffic Patterns:
Family – Follows each member of the household throughout the home; most complex Work – Kitchen is generally the hub Work Triangle – route between the sink, refrigerator, and range Should NOT exceed more than 22 ft. in length!!!
32
Types of Traffic Patterns:
Service – Relates to the movement of people in and out of the home as they make service calls, deliver goods, read meters, take garbage out, etc.
33
Types of Traffic Patterns:
Guest – Involves movement from the entry to coat closets and to the living room with access to a bathroom
34
Room Relationships Dictate how functional a space will be. Examples:
Dining rooms are adjacent to the living room for convenience in entertaining. Kitchen should be adjacent to the dining room for ease in serving food. Bathrooms should be located close to bedrooms for convenience and privacy.
35
Effective Traffic Pattern Guides
Rooms should NOT be cut in ½ due to traffic paths!!! Related rooms are close together. Bathrooms should be located next to bedrooms. Locate the kitchen near the garage and service entrance. High frequency routes should be short and simple. Excessive hall space is avoided.
