The purpose for the development and use of the new standards is  to more effectively prepare teachers to teach the CCSS ELA in new grade span configurations,  to teach in accordance with the IPTS,  to meet the needs of today’s diverse learners across all Illinois schools,  to address the new ISBE licensing grade level configurations,  to design standards to support development of new programs for middle grade content area and ELA teaching endorsements  And, to ensure that teacher candidates experience a more robust preparation in the teaching of literacy skills across elementary and middle grades in all classrooms.

8.  Teachers who specifically address meeting the needs of diverse student learners and providing support to those who struggle with literacy  24 hour middle grades endorsement required that includes a content and grade level specific middle school ELA methods course – and course work to meet the standards including reading, writing, adolescent literature & literacy assessment.

9. Organization of ELA teaching standards  Teacher outcome based  Six basic categories in all three sets of standards  All three sets of standards address teachers’ roles and responsibilities with regard to teaching ALL students to be literate within their focus or disciplinary curricula.
