Vocabulary 4 Applied art - art made to be functional as well as visually pleasing 4 Artists - people who use imagination and skill to communicate ideas in visual form 4 Collage - art work arranged from cut or torn material pasted to a surface 4 Fine art - art made to be experienced visually

4 Patrons of the arts - sponsors, or supporters of an artist or art-related places and events 4 Perceive – to become aware through the senses of the special nature of objects- looking at and thinking deeply about what you see. 4 Point of view - the angle from which the viewer sees the scene 4 Portfolio- a carefully selected collection of art work kept by students and professional artists.

The Art Experience 4 Understanding art takes more than just looking at art 4 Looking - and knowing how to look - are essential 4 it takes truly seeing - or perceiving the object - to gain understanding

Examining art works 4 All works created by artists are made to be viewed 4 Some are created with an added purpose; they are meant to be used.

4 Fine art - is “art for art’s sake” –to communicate the artists feelings or ideas 4 Applied art is usually found in our everyday lives –Either made by hand or with machines

Artists and Ideas 4 Blank sheet of paper is a challenge 4 Greeks prayed to Muses to inspire them –Muses are special goddesses 4 they built shrines to honor the Muses

Where do ideas come from? 4 The world of myths and legends –some artists borrow ideas from famous works of literature 4 The world of imagination –dreams and fantasies –artists have the ability to turn dreams and even nightmares into the illusion of reality

4 Their own hearts and minds –personal beliefs, or feelings are often a source of ideas for art 4 Real-world events and people –people and events often turn up in art

4 Ideas commissioned by employers –artists are hired by individuals or companies to create works of art 4 Artists of the past –artists learn and build on the work of artists who came before them –artists might base work directly on earlier pieces
