What is surrealism? The Surrealists were a group of artists who created art from their "inner worlds." Paris was the birthplace of this style. The Surrealists preferred a positive or whimsical absurdity. They were influenced by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud to create "unconscious paintings which correspond to a state of dreaming." They were trying to find a higher degree of reality. Surrealism frequently incorporates real objects in unreal situations and visual representations of dreams

Salvador Dali The Persistence of Memory Sleep, 1937

Look at art by contemporary Surrealists Jeff Mihalyo And Maggie TaylorMaggie Taylor

Create your own surreal collage. Make a scene that could not happen in real life. Cut carefully to make it look “seamless”. Be sure you plan a background. The entire page should be filled.

Find magazine pictures and carefully cut around them.

Cut slots to insert other pictures. You may need to fold and then cut.

Keep cutting out and adding to your picture. Careful cutting makes it all look real. This is 3 different pictures. You’ll want a background too. Use at least 4 different pictures.

Please recycle your paper scraps!
