Movement and Regions Themes of Geography EQs: Why do people move/migrate? What is a region and how does it get its name? Lecture Notes are available at: www.geocities.com/seafordj

Movement Two forms… Daily movement (going from place to place) that is not permanent Migration –A permanent change in residence to outside one’s community of origin. Why people migrate… –To follow thing such as ideas, other people, food, or just to be near familiar things –Pull Factors: Reasons to move to a particular place. Ex. Higher paying work, pleasant atmosphere/climate, lower land/housing costs, family live nearby –Push Factors: Reasons to move from a particular place. Ex. High costs (taxes), overcrowding, unsuitable atmosphere (crime, pollution), unemployment, ethnic or religious strife, war

Problems with Migration Economic impacts to a place losing/gaining people can be positive and/or negative Migration = Brain Drain (for developing nations particularly) Some places become over-crowded, unable to maintain capacity Ex. Primate cities

What is a region? 1.A large, usually continuous segment of a surface or space; area. 2.A large, indefinite portion of the earth's surface. 3.A specified district or territory. 4.An area of interest or activity; a sphere. Succinctly, a region is an area that is given some kind of name based upon a unified/shared characteristic that is perceived

Naming Regions: Characteristics of Perception Physical Regions (landform, directional, climate) Political Regions (Government type, Affiliation) Social Regions (Culture, Religion, Language) Economic Regions (Land Use, common product, Wealth)

So many ways to define regions in the World…

Three Main Types of Regions Formal Region: area distinguished by one or more common characteristics. Defined with proper names and generally accepted Functional Region: Area defined by a single point that provides a service. An “area served by” Perceptual Region: defined by people’s shared feelings and stereotypes

For the remainder of time… Creating Perceptual Regions Activity (I will demonstrate) Using the map provided (US), label regions. DO NOT label states, CREATE new regions with inventive names, using your discretion and creativity! CREATE using your “perceptions” of different parts of the this country.
