2 What are human rights? 1948 – United Nations issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights What are some of the rights protected in this document? Does everyone enjoy these rights Why or why not? Who is most at risk of having their human rights violated? Why do you suppose this is so?

4 How does disease affect population and life expectancy? How has globalization affected the transmission of disease? an outbreak of contagious disease that spreads quickly and affects many people

5 Major Epidemics of our Lifetime 1) SARS – November 2002: A type of pneumonia originating in China. Hundreds killed in only a few months

6 Major Epidemics of our Lifetime 2) HIV/AIDS – Over 25 million people have died from AIDS since 1981…millions more are infected.

7 The movement of people around the world -war, persecution, and poverty. -REFUGEE: one who flees violence in their home country to seek safety in another - Job opportunities and a better life. -Most popular destinations are developed countries

8 The increase in the percentage of people who live in cities. What are some of the advantages of urbanization? Disadvantages?

9 WHY SHOULD WE CARE? RESOURCE USE: Since 1800, the World’s population has grown from 1 to 6 billion! -It is foolish to expect infinite resources in a finite World

10 Why should we care? POLLUTION: garbage and debris spread disease. Gases and emissions lead to: Global Warming: - the rise in the surface temperature of the earth over time

11 SOLUTIONS 1. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE 2. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: economic development that does not permanently damage resources 3. ALTERNATE SOURCES OF ENERGY: solar, wind, hydrogen, and electric energy sources are on the rise.
