Overview Second Life is a virtual world that includes many educational resources for students, faculty and staff to utilize in an educational or research environment Using this resource will expand the variety of sources to utilize during research and learning, from the typical sources found in the library or on questionable websites

Goal To learn how to access educational resources in secondlife.com for use in an educational environment.

Objectives After this presentation, students, faculty, and staff will be able to do the following with little or no assistance – Access secondlife.com – Create an account – Download Second Life Viewer to PC or Mac – Login to Second Life – Search for JMU campus and teleport to it – Teleport from JMU campus to educational resources

Previous Knowledge Some experiences you may already have that apply to accessing and using secondlife.com include: Using a computer Accessing a web browser Downloading applications from a browser

Access Browser of Choice Select the internet browser you prefer to use by double clicking the icon

Access Website Access secondlife.com by typing www.secondlife.com into the URL bar.www.secondlife.com Accessing this website will take you to the Second Life homepage.

Create an Account Click the Join Now button to navigate to the account creation page. Next, fill in all the required information to create an account

Create an Account You will have to access your email to complete the account registration process. Click the link to activate your account. Once you activate your account you will be taken to a screen like the one to the left.

Downloading Second Life Click the button that looks like the one above to download and install Second Life Follow the steps in the downloading steps to your preference

Login to Second Life Double-click the Second Life Icon to open the viewer Enter login Information and click the login button

Navigating in Second Life You start at a “home” On the right of the screen is a navigation bar. Navigation Bar

Accessing the World Map First click on the navigation bar. This will open the home menu where you can choose to open the world map. Once the map is open your screen will look like this:

Teleporting to JMU Type James Madison University into the Find bar on the right of the world map. To teleport to JMU Campus click the teleport button. This message means you are being teleported to the James Madison University Campus.
