1 National food balance sheet of the Republic of Armenia

2 National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia Main Functions to collect, process, summarize, analyze and publish statistical data, to co-operate with appropriate state and local self- governmental bodies in the collection of statistical information, to develop and improve methodologies for statistical work, to co-ordinate the information and data collection according to the unified classification and coding system based on international standards, to organize statistical surveys, to carry out Population Census every 10 years, to establish, maintain and update the Business Register, to provide users with statistical information, to ensure the transparency and accessibility of summary statistical information, to co-operate with international organizations and national statistical services, publish food balance sheet.

3 Legal Basis RA Law “On State Statistics” adopted on 04.04.2000. RA Law “On Population Census” adopted on 12.10.1999. RA Law “On Agricultural Census” adopted on 27.11.2008. State statistical work programs: - Three-year state statistical work program (law) - Annual state statistical work program. Resolutions of the State Council on Statistics and other national and above-national normative acts.

4 The Principles of the State Statistical Work Program Formation 1. availability of resources, 2. burdens on respondents, 3. cost-effectiveness, 4. comparability with the international statistical standards, 5. stable periodicity during the long term, 6. proportion of recourses foreseen for state statistics on annual basis, 7. study of the demand of statistical information users. 7 The sub-unit responsible for compilation of food balances (FB) in RA Food security statistics division of the NSS RA is responsible authority in the Republic of Armenia for compilation of food balances (starting from producers to consumers)

8 Food Balances calculated for 14 commodities Wheat Potato Vegetables Fruit (excluding grapes) Leguminous crops Vegetable oil Sugar Eggs Milk (excluding butter) Beef Pork Mutton and goat meat Poultry Grape

9 Structure of food balances The list of 14 commodities for composing of food balance sheets based on principle of registration of most widely consumed products according to the data of Integrated Living Conditions Survey of households. Particularly, the mentioned foodstuffs comprise more than 80% of the total volume of used food energy.

10 Conversion of processed goods to the equivalent of primary goods Wheat includes data on wheat, flour, macaroni, ethyl alcohol, bread and other bakery goods, which are conditionally transformed into wheat. Vegetables include data on fresh, dry, frozen and canned vegetables (cabbage of all types, cucumber, tomatoes, beet, bulb onion, garlic etc.) Fruits include data on fresh, dry, frozen and canned fruit (drupaceous, stone-fruit, subtropical, tropical etc) Leguminous crops include data on beans, lentils and other beans. Eggs include data on eggs in shells, as well as egg powder. Milk includes data on fresh milk, milk powder, matsun, sour cream, cottage cheese, cheese and other milk products. Beef, Pork, Mutton and Goat meat, Poultry include data on slaughter weight, as well as sausages, canned eat and other meat products conditionally transformed into meat in slaughter weight. Grape includes data on grapes, as well raisins.

11 Components of Food Balance Sheets of RA Opening stocks, Production volume, Import volume, Total supply (food stocks at the beginning of year + production volume + import ), Food consumption, Feed, Waste, Seeds (including eggs for incubation), Export, Other uses (for inedible purpose), Closing Stocks, Total Consumption/Utilization (Food Consumption + Feed + Waste + Seeds + Export + Other Uses+ Closing Stocks) Self-sufficiency Ratio Per capita Supply / Consumption ( in kg/year, gr /day, kcal/ day)

12 Sources for the preparation of Food Balance Sheets Production volume – official data from NSS RA, Import and export volumes – data from Customs Service of State Revenue Committee of RA, Food Consumption – data of Integrated Living Conditions Survey of households carried out by NSS RA, Feed – data from Ministry of Agriculture of RA and data derived by interweaving of food producers, Waste – data from Ministry of Agriculture of RA, Seeds (including eggs for incubation) – data from Ministry of Agriculture of RA, Closing Stocks – data of sample survey on agriculture carried out by the NSS RA and data from the organizations dealing with import of food.
