Henry Seidel Canby (1924) captured the process of writing perfectly when he wrote, "Good writing is always a breaking of the soil, clearing away prejudices, pulling up of sour weeds of crooked thinking, stripping the turf so as to get at what is fertile beneath" (p.135). Let’s Review It has been a quick first week. I hope that you are all becoming comfortable with the KU platform. Last week you met your classmates and your instructor. You explored the platform and all of the resources, you reviewed the syllabus, and read three Adobe Documents. You shared in a discussion, completed an assignment and a graded review… wow… you did a lot! Does anyone have any questions? Thoughts?

11 Unit 2: Professional Roles, with Populations and Needs Served in the Field of Child Development
As you know, the field of early childhood development consists of countless services, which include; programs for infants and toddlers, preschool programs, family childcare, childcare centers, kindergarten, and schooling for primary age children. Each has the potential to foster healthy development and learning as well as positively impact children's lives; however, each of these require professionals to have similar characteristics as they partake in the role of working with children and their families.

12 Unit 2 Assignments : Complete the readings.
Complete the learning activities. Participate in discussion. Attend seminar (one assignment done!) Complete and submit the project.

13 Seminar In seminar, we will review our readings for the week and we will discuss the jobs available in the field of early childhood development. We will discuss work environments, educational and licensing requirements, salaries and job prospects. I hope you are willing and prepared to share…

There are many career opportunities in the field of early childhood development. Many of them can be found on O*Net: Enjoy and explore! Then, pick one of the jobs that interests you. Each of the following is covered in the job you have selected in O*Net. In reviewing your choice, discuss each of the following and why you think you could be well matched to this profession: Tasks, Tools, & Technology Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Work Activities and Context Wages & Employment Trends, State and National Availability Then, reflect back on the reading of learning styles and share how your learning style will assist you in your role of the career/job that you highlighted.

18 Unit 2 Project Review the early childhood development jobs described in the unit and then go to an online career/employment site, such as Monster.com or Jobing.com. Search for jobs in the childcare, preschool, or the K-2 setting. After you have explored the job listings for a while, choose two of the jobs that interest you. If you are unable to find any suitable jobs at the career site, you may use your local newspaper.

19 Then… Then, for each job, complete the following using the template provided: 1. List the job title and job description. 2. List the skills needed for the job, taken both from the job description and your own analysis of the job. Be sure to list at least five skills, three of which are specific skills in the early childhood development field. 3. Explain why each of the skills listed in #2 would be needed to succeed in the position you have selected.
