2 Let’s take a closer look at each of our math definitions.

3 1 pattern a planned repetition of something

4 2 product The answer in multiplication 8 x 9 = 72

5 function the relationship between two numbers in which one
3 function the relationship between two numbers in which one number depends on the other, usually shown in a function table input/output

6 a collection of numbers, operation signs, and sometimes variables that
4 equation a collection of numbers, operation signs, and sometimes variables that names a number, with an = sign

7 letters or other symbols
5 algebra a type of math that uses letters or other symbols to represent numbers

8 inequalities statements indicating that two quantities are not equal,
6 inequalities statements indicating that two quantities are not equal, utilizing symbols > (greater than) or < (less than) or =

9 7 variable a symbol used to represent a number A + 6 = 9

10 answer by mathematical procedures
8 compute solve, to determine an answer by mathematical procedures

11 distributive property
9 distributive property The property that states that multiplying a sum by a number gives the same result as multiplying by each number then adding the products 3(5+6) = (3x5) + (3x6)

12 (4 x 6) x9 = 4 x (6 x 9) associative property
10 associative property in addition and multiplication, changing the order of the grouping does not change the sum or product (4 x 6) x9 = 4 x (6 x 9)

13 commutative property 5 + 8 = 8 + 5 a property of addition and
11 commutative property a property of addition and multiplication that states that by changing the order of addends or factors does not change the sum or product 5 + 8 = 8 + 5

14 identity property the property that states that by adding 0 or by
12 identity property the property that states that by adding 0 or by multiplying by 1 does not change a number a + 0 = a a x 1 = a

15 inverse property The property that states: the sum of a number and
13 inverse property The property that states: the sum of a number and its opposite is 0 9 + (-9) = 0

16 parentheses ( ) the symbols used to
14 parentheses ( ) the symbols used to show what operation should be completed first

17 numerical expressions
15 numerical expressions collection of numbers, symbols, and operation signs that stands for a number
