Magarini IWRM Project Giving Hope to a World of Need4 Approaches Community Led Total Sanitation to trigger Subsidy for poor households Hygiene promoters( Community Health Extension Officers) hired by program with monthly stipend Results to Date 180 household latrines serving 1080 individuals in FY 2011 90 household latrines serving additional 540 individuals in FY 2012 School WASH 7 stances block including urinal for boys in Bomani primary school has been completed serving additional 230 pupils 7 stances girls block in the same school currently under construction

Global Water Initiative( GWI) Program Giving Hope to a World of Need6 Approaches Initial- Demand driven- did not resonate with local pastoral context-2007-2008 Subsidy -slabs Community Led Total Sanitation to trigger Hygiene promoters( Community Health Extension Workers) Outputs by Year : FY 2008 -4 school latrines -120 beneficiaries FY 2009 -30 additional school latrines-900 additional beneficiaries -105 household latrines -630 additional beneficiaries FY 2010 : -73 household latrines-438 additional beneficiaries -20 school latrines- 600 additional pupils FY 11 52 household latrines-312 additional beneficiaries Beneficiaries = 312 people 1 public latrines completed in Roka at the chiefs office (approximately 17 beneficiaries daily 2 latrines at Buwa dispensary (approx. 50 people daily who visit the facility 14 additional latrines for schools-360 pupils 2012- Change of focus from direct Service delivery

Challenges Giving Hope to a World of Need7 Negative cultural beliefs- centralized feaces, sharing with in laws, children and adults Low value attached to construction and usage of latrines Communities indicate there is high cost & time related to construction of latrine( digging pit) Lack of skills and tools for construction Environmental conditions- hard rock formation and high water tables Latrines not prioritized- people prefer open, airy places-latrines smell

8. Giving Hope to a World of Need8 Follow up Crucial for both demand driven and subsidy. Case of CLTS soon after triggering ensure that communities keep up the pace and momentum in the progression towards attaining total sanitation. Joint reviews and sharing of Results Encourages households that have lagged behind effecting the collective decision to act sooner. Close collaboration with Government The close working relations developed between the project team and the Ministry of public health and sanitation has ensured systematic monitoring of progress at community Role of Local/Natural Leaders- central/key It’s important to offer support supervision to the community based committees/natural leaders taking lead the process to ensure efforts remains viable and on track.
