2 About the NGO Working with drug-abused street children in Bombay since 1989. NGO Components: – Boys center (Details):Details educational project (children aged <13) Vocational training for adolescents boys (in 3 locations – Dadar, VT, Santacruz). – Girls rehabilitation center in Lonavla (Bombay outskirts) – Prevention of HIV-AIDS project; also service for other NGOs – City-wide drug awareness outreach program People involved

3 Asha ’ s Involvement Shanmuga ‘ discovered ’ SUPPORT in 1999 Seattle funding ‘ 00- ’ 03: $64,000 Feedback: NGO is a no-nonsense group, with a very good rehabilitation program Regular updates in addition to annual balance sheet Successful site-visits (including my own) In Essence: NGO very Trustworthy Details of funding sources, funds for each projects etc

4 Current Proposal For Vocational Training Program (Details)Details Asha Seattle cannot support with much this year. More boys rescued and under SUPPORT umbrella Local donations in cash/kind to cover: – food and nutrition for 100 boys. – Annual picnics – Locker facility and other misc. expenses

5 Current Proposal – contd. Proposal for 1 year operation includes: – Center rent and utilities (single center for all voc. training) – Center coordinator, social worker, trainers, educators – salary and benefits. – Health and medical expenses for 60 residents (Food covered by another source) – Office supplies, travel and transportation – Training for 160 boys (8 batches): equipment, stipend (Rs. 300 each/month) (reusing machinery from last year) – Sending some boys back home; Total Requirement : $27,000 (today ’ s exchange rate)$27,000 Will train lesser boys with lesser money.

7 Boys center Operation Medical treatment and Rehabilitation – Doctor visits once a week; hospital visits – Group & individual counseling Character building: – Develop self-confidence – Self expression: Drama, paintingDramapainting – Taking Initiative: OWN place to live.OWN – Craft work and card-making Education: – Indoor coaching classes & school for younger children;younger – Vocational training for adolescent boys with a literacy program – based on interesttraining Final goal: Reunite boys with families after developing decent livelihood skills/becoming literate

9 Attracting New Funds Drug-addicted street boys are an invisible population – – “ we play role of snake charmers ” Foreign donors prefer rural projects Sujata Ganega: “ we are too grassroots to build social contacts of film stars, MLA ’ s wife, and others …” Troubling Apathy of society towards these kids: – A local dentist approached for donation said: “ They took drugs for their pleasure.. They were not victims! Why should we take the burden ? ” - Very hard to explain problem
