What is Civics? The study of what it means to be a United States Citizen Citizen: A legally recognized member of a country - Originated in Greece and adopted by Romans

Citizenship Roman Republic Citizenship Today
Term to distinguish between those who lived in Rome and those conquered Citizens had privileges (Vote) and responsibilities (taxes, serve in Roman army) Citizenship Today Rights and Responsibilities differ depending on type of government Government: Organizations, institutions, and individuals who exercise political authority over a group of people

United States Citizenship
Citizenship is more than enjoying the rights Must be productive and active member of society Participate in many ways Belong to a family School Member of local community State Country Must fulfill duties for each group you belong to Good citizenship is a learned behavior

American Values Equality - Equal under the law - Equal in opportunity
“Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” --Benjamin Franklin American Values Equality - Equal under the law - Equal in opportunity Liberty - Freedoms and Rights - Seem basic but are not guaranteed everywhere Justice - Government must protect our guaranteed rights

Qualities of a Good Citizen
PARTICIPATION!!! Voting in Elections Makes officials accountable to the people Expressing your Opinion Must tell them when we disagree Write an official or letters to the editor of a newspaper

Characteristics of an Effective Citizen?
Responsible Family Members Respect and obey laws Respect rights and property of others Are loyal and proud of their country Take part in and improve life in their communities Take an active part in government Use natural resource wisely Informed on key issues and take a stand Believe in equal opportunity for all Respect individual differences
