Review Hitler had already begun to take land but he didn’t want to take land that would make the Soviet Union go to war with Germany.

Non-Aggression So, Hitler signed a non-aggression treaty with Stalin. They agreed to not go to war with each other.

Why did the Soviet Union sign the treaty?
The army didn’t feel ready to fight ANOTHER war. They were hurt VERY badly during WWI.

Sept 1, Hitler invaded Poland 2 days later, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany.

And the air-force was able to shoot down German planes…. Great Britain defeated the Germans!

The Soviet Union lost millions of soldiers
BUT they were able to defeat the Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942.

Why were the Soviet Union soldiers able to defeat the Germans?
1. The Germans weren’t prepared (ready) for the harsh Soviet winter. Tanks and weapons didn’t work in extreme cold.

The Pacific Front The U.S. wanted to be neutral but it favored the Allies. U.S. sent military aid to the British

Pearl Harbor On Dec 7, 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

U.S. declares war The U.S. declared war on Japan.
The next day Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.

At the same time….. The Soviet Union moved in to attach Germany on the east. On May 8, 1945 Germany surrendered and Hitler shot and killed himself.

Bombing in Japan 3 days later- The U.S. dropped ANOTHER atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan Japan surrendered. The war was officially over August 9,1945
