Nature provides newborn babies with a potent dose of the mother’s antibodies through “first-milk” or colostrum. Colostrum is the first fluid milk produced after the birth of a calf. Cows produce colostrum for only 2-3 days before the composition changes to that of milk. Colostrum contains the same immune components as human colostrum/milk, and cow’s milk, but in different ratios. Colostrum differs from milk in that it has a higher protein concentration, and many fold higher levels of bioactive proteins that support the immune protection of the newborn calf, including immunoglobulins, especially IgG, lactoferrin, and lactoperoxidase. For example, the concentration of IgG in Pharmanex Colostrum microfiltrate is roughly 500 times higher than in milk.
The IgG in colostrum is now shown to provide these immune benefits at any age. The immunoglobulins or antibodies present in Colostrum microfiltrate possess broad binding capability for pathogens, including many microorganisms that are pathogens for humans. This binding capability is a result of the cow’s normal exposure to microorganisms in the environment and occurs without any immunization. The primary forms of immunoglobulins in bovine and human colostrum, while structurally different, serve analogous functions. Bovine IgG has been shown to survive GI passage in man, as either intact molecules or functional antibody fragments, and still retain biological activity.
The total immune system benefits of colostrum cannot be solely attributed to its immunoglobulin content. The smaller molecules in colostrum are perhaps more important as immune system modulators. These molecules include specific transfer factors, cytokines, defensins, and other immunological cofactors. These molecules cause various immune system changes resulting in improved NK cell activity and associated increases in cyto-toxic and anti-infective intermediates including TNF. Immune system modulating products such as AI/E 10™ enhance the normal coordinated pathways of a healthy immune system.
