U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee Meeting Peter Faletra April 20, 2005 Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Why is DOE Interested in Workforce Development?  IG Report (July 2001) states “the Department could face a shortage of nearly 40 percent in its science and technical classifications within five years.”  DOE is the largest federal agency funding basic research in physical sciences. We need to ensure we have the workforce to accomplish this research.

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Why is DOE Interested in Workforce Development? Final Report of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board's Task Force on the Future of Science Programs at the Department of Energy -- October 13, 2003 “The Department should dramatically enhance its role in educating and training future scientists and engineers, drawn from America’s diverse population, for careers in DOE-related fields. The Department should establish strong programs of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowships or traineeships in the physical sciences and engineering and should strengthen its outreach at the K-12 level.”

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Goals of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists 1.Grade School - to - Grad School approach for attracting students into the STEM pathway a.Science Bowl Activities/K-12 Teacher Professional Development b.Undergraduate Internships c.Graduate Fellowships d.Faculty Research Opportunities

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Goals of DOE Workforce Development Office 2.Use the DOE National Laboratories as a Resource a.Safe, well-established, well-supported places for big science b.Large, first-class facilities and instruments for cutting-edge science c.Strong human resources for mentoring d.Community of government, university, and private resources

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Undergraduate Laboratory Research Internships Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship Community College Institute Pre-Service Teacher Program

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Undergraduate Internships  Research experience at an Office of Science Laboratory  10 week summer internships  16 week semester internships  $400 per week stipend  Travel included  Housing allowance included  Students required to write a science abstract and a research paper  Outside evaluation conducted each year

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy For students majoring in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, or technology. Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Paid internships for undergraduate students enrolled in two or four year institutions and interested in advancing their scientific and technical expertise and graduate school and career options. 10 Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy SULI: Our Flagship Program  SULI places students with mentor scientists at DOE National Labs for 10 weeks in the summer or for 16 weeks during a fall or spring semester term.

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Some things SULI is NOT:  SULI is not a small program  We will place over 450 undergraduates in 14 labs this summer  We had over 2000 completed applications for these positions  SULI is not just a “resume” builder  Students are paid $400 per week  Funding is available for travel and housing

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Career training internship in all branches of science, mathematics, and engineering. * Award Winning Program for College Students Semi-Finalist for Harvard Award “Innovations in American Government” Recognized by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans as an exemplary program. Observation and Discovery Photo Credit: PNNL 2002 Community College students enter the scientific work force and expand career options. Community College Institute (CCI) In Science and Technology*

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy In order to apply to CCI Applicants Must: Be at least 18 years old Be enrolled in an accredited US Community College Be a U.S. citizen or PRA Have health insurance Have passed at least 12 credit hours of coursework toward a degree Have interest in a STEM career

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy CCI Enhancements Activities  Are matched with world-renowned scientists who serve as mentors  Are trained to use advanced scientific instruments  Attend seminars on scientific inquiry and methodology  Receive training on career planning and transition to 4 year colleges  Develop professional communication skills

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Undergraduate Research Experiences … Learn by Doing! For students majoring in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, or technology. Pre-Service Teachers (PST) Paid summer research internships at one of the National Laboratories. Each intern works with both a research mentor and a Master Teacher. Don’t just teach science, math, or technology; Do it! Learning by doing Photo Credit: PNNL 2002

Office of Science U.S. Department of Energy Pre-Service Teachers (PST)  To enhance the nation’s source of proficient K-12 science, mathematics, and technology teachers  Must be junior or senior or graduating community college student  For students interested in becoming K-12 teacher in science, math or technology  Students mentored by lab scientists and master teachers to master content knowledge and apply to classroom
